In Celebration of Donuts, Beer and PR

A good PR practitioner knows his holidays – not just the holidays that everyone gets off of work, but the more obscure ones that we can run some fun PR stunts around for our clients. For example, you probably haven’t bought a present yet for your office Systems Administrator for next month’s SysAdmin Appreciation Day, but we are busily readying our PR plans to honor these unsung heroes for one of my relevant technology clients.

Which brings me to today’s “holiday,” one that should be marked on everyone’s calendar regardless of what you do for a living: National Donut Day.

Sadly, I don’t have a relevant client that could credibly leverage this for a PR stunt. I tried to think of one, believe me. So instead, I trekked out to Saugus, Mass. early this morning to pick up a fresh box of nationally renowned Kane’s Donuts for our highly deserving staff that’s done some simply amazing work in recent weeks.

Interestingly enough, National Donut Day was not the PR brainchild of some evil national donut conglomerate trying to boost sagging sales. It was born from the good people of the Salvation Army in 1938. The sale of donuts on this day was used to raise money for the needy while also honoring the women who used to serve donuts to soldiers during World War I. Or, so says Wikipedia. I’ll just go with it because I like the story.

And in a happy coincidence, you might not be aware that it’s also Boston Beer Week here locally. (Now that’s a double whammy right there. Move International Bacon Day to this week, and you’d have the ultimate trifecta.)  In fact, this gives me some inspiration for what we can do for the staff later this afternoon. After all, you need something refreshing to wash down that morning donut. That’s just how we roll here.
